Glossary of Student Cities

Our SU Online students come from all over the world.  Let's build a glossary about the amazing cities that you are all from!

Add an entry to this glossary for your city.  It can be the city you grew up in, the city you currently reside, or your favorite city.  Please follow these directions:

  • Concept: Your concept should be titled "City, Country" or "City, State, Country."  For example: Paris, France or Chicago, Illinois, USA
  • Description: Describe your city in a few sentences.  Is your city large or small?  Located on the water or high up in the mountains?  What is your city known for?  Why do you love this city?  Add a photo of your city to your description.
  • Keyword(s): Add the state and country to the keywords so that others can search entries by state and country.
  • Attachment (optional): Add a word document with additional information about your city.

Look at the Chicago, Illinois, USA entry by Molly Kelsen (test student) for an example.

Belgrade, Montana USA

by Susan Zeter - Monday, August 17, 2020, 11:43 AM

Belgrade is in the high desert of southwestern Montana.  We are six miles from Bozeman known for being the home of Montana State University and a fast growing city.  Belgrade is known as "the bedroom community of Bozeman".  A lot of people work in Bozeman but live in Belgrade as it is cheaper to rent or buy a home here. Although Belgrade is located on a plain, an ancient lake bed, it is juxtapose to the beautiful Bridger Mountains which makes it a gorgeous place to live.

Chicago is one of the major metropolitan areas in the United States.  It is located in the northern mid-west of the US on the lower west side of Lake Michigan.  Chicago is a flat sprawling city that is known as the birthplace of American architecture.  The architecture is one of the reasons why this is one of my favorite cities in America.

Los Angeles or the City of Angels is the largest city in California, United States.  A metropolitan city of approximately 4 million people.  It has a pleasant weather and it is known for its entertainment industry.  I live in a little town north of Los Angeles and away from its sprawling suburbs.

City, State, Country

by Robin Bourke - Monday, November 27, 2017, 3:26 AM

North Richmond is a semi-rural suburb of Richmond in the State of New South Wales, Australia.

67 Kilometres north-west of Sydney central business district.  The local government area is called the Hawkesbury.  The Hawkesbury river is 5 minutes walk and the Blue Mountains are 45 minutes drive north.

I love it here because of the silence, the green grasses and the seeing the horses and cattle.

Surprising, last week the World Polo Championships were were held just across the road.

El Paso, TX USA

El Paso, TX is a very large city.  It's situated in the western corner of Texas and is separated from Juarez, Mexico by the Rio Grande River. El Paso is also on the border between Texas and New Mexico.  The Franklin Mountains, part of the Rocky Mountains, are beautiful and keep us safe from tornadoes!

Emigrant, Mt. USA

by Penelope Price - Wednesday, November 25, 2020, 9:25 PM

Emigrant is located halfway between Livingston, Mt. and the Gardiner entrance to Yellowstone, National Park.  It is a small town with one store, one gas station, a saloon, a bank, a post office, a gift store, a laundromat and a few restaurants.  Although it might at first appear insignificant, because of its location on highway 89  people traveling to Yellowstone Park stop on their way.   There are flashing orange lights alerting travelers to slow down as they approach Emigrant. To the left is the store and theYellowstone River  and to the right is the post office and bank and Story Road leading up to the residential community of North Glastonbury.  I love to come home and see Emigrant peak towering behind the town,  and  although it is small, we have everything we need and it peaceful.

Espoo, Finland

by Eija Paatero - Friday, November 27, 2020, 11:59 PM

Espoo belongs to the Finnish capital region in southern Finland. Its population (almost 300, 000) is the second-largest in Finland next to the capital, Helsinki. It does not have a traditional city centre but instead seven major areas and many local regional centres. Aalto University (technology, economics, art and design) and several major companies are based in Espoo.

Nature is near everywhere in Espoo. The city has a large coastline and about 70 lakes.

Gardiner, Montana, USA

by Jane Hohmann - Thursday, August 13, 2020, 1:03 PM

The population of Gardiner is about 870 people and this is why I like it.  During the summer there are many more people in town who are tourists.  Gardiner is known as the Northern Gate to Yellowstone National Park, visited by about 1 million people each year.  Gardiner is very different when it's not summer tourist season. It is a small and friendly community, located at the southern end of Paradise Valley (the Yellowstone River Valley).  It is between mountains, and the Yellowstone River runs through it.  It's beautiful, and you can walk from one end to the other.  You can also see elk regularly there--you have to be careful not to hit them when you're driving!

Lafayette, Louisiana is a beautiful city that is very family oriented. With festivals, local art walks, cajun cuisine, and live Cajun music it is an exciting place to live in. the people are down to earth and friendly. They know how to make everyone feel at home.
